We woke up to a big boom this morning. At first I thought it was an earthquake but then nothing moved and we did hear sirens in the distance. We are right on the harbor and what happened was a car that was in a container was being fumigated and exploded. The investigation continues.

This is a city of hills. We took the cable car up to the top and walked down through the Botanical Gardens. It was a gorgeous morning, cool and clear. Since it is early fall here, the gardens had seen their best, but the annual beds at the bottom were quite nice.

The gardens had lots of moms and kids walking and playing in fountains and play areas.
Our next stop was Zealandia, Since man has made his appearance on this island, he brought along many pred

ators that killed off an alarming number of native birds. The folks at Zealandia fenced off a large area and killed off all the predators, thus allowing the native birds to flourish. In fact, many endangered birds are making a come back. We saw a newly introduced pair of Takahe. Only 250 exist in the wild. Another sucess story of this place is the Kaka, a large parrot as well as the noise Tui. We had a wonderful afternoon of wandering this place and enjoyed the volunteers who were stationed about and willing to help sight birds and describe their behaviors. It was amazing to see so many birds using the nectar feeders, especially the Kakas.
