Wellington April 1, 2011

No real birds today, just animatrons. We were off to Weta Cave. It is a 15 minute bus ride from downtown. This is the home to the creative team that in their own words "helped bring to life the Lord of the Rings, Avatar, District 9, King Kong and the Chronicles of Narnia." I was along for the ride on this one since I admit, I have not seen one of these films. Right now they are filming the Hobbit in 3-D. The film paparazzi are shooting over the fences to see the creatures walking to the studio. To hide their appearances, they have taken to using big umbrellas to shield their faces and bodies from the curious. We watched a 30 minute movie in the Cave, since a tour of the studio was out of the question. It is a quite amazing place with lots of creative people at work. Their many Academy awards attest to this.

Back on the bus and back to town. The rest of the day was dedicated to the Te Papa museum, which was quite wonderful. It was so big, you just could not take it all in over the course of several hours. There were exhibits on culture, geology, animals and plant life, Maori life and culture, history and art. It is a beautiful building sitting on the harbor and is free.

Tomorrow we are off to the South Island, which everyone assures us, is even more beautiful. A three hour ferry ride will get us there.
