Wellington to Picton (South Island) April 2, 201

We woke up to another beautiful day in Wellington. Before checking out we shopped at three outdoor stores for Icebreaker clothing. Mike bought a piece at Tongario for 50% off. We found one store with a good sale going on and bought a couple of pieces. They are made of wool and are advertised as "no stink." They wick away moisture....

Off to the ferry to the South Island. While waiting in the queue for the ferry we saw a guy with a beautifully restored 1955 Cadillac. The owner is a horse trainer and has been to Harrisburg for the horse show. He has not been to the Carlisle or Hershey car shows. We also chatted with a couple who had a Fiat motor home that he was fixing up himself. He already had a bed built in the back and a bathroom. He is doing all the work himself. Once on board the ferry, we sat down next to a couple who ran a tour business called Tours4Matures. She is a Kiwi, he is British. The have a 12 passenger van; she drives, he commentates. They were off to Christchurch to pick up their group for a fall tour of the South Island.

The crossing can be rough but today, the sea is calm and the crossing is smooth. Once we reached the South Island we entered Marlborough Sounds. It took about 90 minutes to reach Picton. It was a beautiful end to the day.

We went to dinner at a pub recommended by the hotel. We had a wonderful meal of blue cod(the season just started yesterday). Rugby was on the big screen and a guy sitting nearby helped us understand some of the basic rules of the game. We had a nice conversation with him and he suggested we attend a rugby game, especially next Saturday night when the Christchurch team will be playing, but not in their stadium, which was destroyed by the quake.
It was a satisfying day.
